I made my first porch swing in 2002.. Money was tight that year and I needed creative solutions for Christmas. I decided to make my grandparents a porch swing for their lake house. I'd never made a porch swing before, but I was confident I could do it. I wanted lots of curves, a strong high back, and something unique. My folks enjoyed it for several years before my Grandpa passed away and my Grandma moved away. I made this 5' design a few years later as a special request.

Designed for comfort, this beautifully made patio swing is handmade using heart redwood. The seat is 60" wide and the back is 28" high and curved with a headrest. All pieces are made by hand, sanded to ensure uniformity, and unique to each porch swing made. I countersink all screws in the seat and back.

All screws in the armrest and chain fascia are recessed and covered with real wood plugs and sanded to a fine finish. The chain supports are hidden from view and anchored to the seat of the patio swing and not the armrest.

Like everything else I make, I went overboard on the hardware. There are three supports under the seat and behind the backrest all held together with 2-1/2" screws and 3/8" bolts. I chose 3/8" eyebolts for the chain supports and hang the swing with 3/16" proof link chain.

As a rule, I don't sell porch swings.. I'd prefer to make them and give them away or make unique ones never to be made again. I'm more likely to make one for you if you don't ask me how much it cost and if you have a great reason for wanting me to build one for you. Send me a note and tell me your story.
