Natural Wood Designs For Our World

The Corona

My second design.. Like most of the really cool stuff I make, there's a story and a reason as to why I make what I make. Years ago a woman wrote and asked if I did custom porch swings. This was early in my development as a custom designer/builder and I wasn't willing to experiment, but her story made me want to make it.

It was a sweet design.. One day on a country ride through some of our scenic Texas back roads, my client and her husband came upon a country store. While perusing the country wares she saw a swing similar to the one I call the Corona. They bought it from an old retired guy who made porch swings to pass the time. She shared this well made porch swing with her husband for years.

She had recently divorced.. Her ex got the swing. She was bummed because she loved the swing and wanted me to make a duplicate. She told me the swing reminded her of better, happier times and making one similar would make her happy. She couldn't find the old retired guy, so she thought I might like to give it a try. Her ex let me come look at it and take some pictures.

I was impressed.. This one made by the old guy was well made, well thought out, and looked great. The picture to the right is the actual swing. Once I saw it I knew I could make it. At first, I thought it should be something new and different to represent her new life, but I wanted to respect the original design and give her what she wanted. I made it and added some of my own inspirations. I named it Corona because it just seemed to fit.

All pieces are made by hand.. Sanded to ensure uniformity, and unique to each porch swing made. I countersink all screws in the seat and back. All screws in the armrest and chain fascia are recessed and covered with real wood plugs and sanded to a fine finish. The chain supports are hidden from view and anchored to the seat of the patio swing and not the armrest. Like everything else I make, I went overboard on the hardware. There are three supports under the seat and behind the backrest all held together with 2-1/2" screws and 3/8" bolts. I chose 1/2" eyebolts for the chain supports and hang the swing with 3/16" proof link chain.

As a rule, I don't sell porch swings.. I'd prefer to make them and give them away or make unique ones never to be made again. I'm more likely to make one for you if you don't ask me how much it cost and if you have a great reason for wanting me to build one for you. Send me a note and tell me your story. If I like it maybe I'll make one for you. I really want this page to inspire you to take on your own porch swing project. You can do it. I did.
