Custom Backyard Playsets – Built for Texas Families
Half the fun of a custom backyard playset is starting with a blank slate and a wish list. That challenge is the root of my passion as a builder. My philosophy has always been simple: “It’s mine until I give it to you.” Every project begins with a rough sketch of an agreed plan, and within 1–3 months, families receive something designed specifically for their kids’ needs. Built with quality and craftsmanship rarely seen in typical backyard forts or swing sets, each playset is handcrafted to last and to inspire.
Whether it’s a durable redwood playhouse, a creative cedar cabin, or another unique DIY outdoor project, Jack’s Backyard delivers custom builds that bring imagination to life—and make your backyard a place where memories grow.
Unique One of a Kind Playsets.
|
At Jack’s Backyard, no two playsets are alike. Every custom wooden backyard playset is designed from scratch, built to reflect a family’s vision and the kids’ imagination. Compact or grand, each design is handcrafted for lasting fun—whether it’s a climbing wall, ladder, tire swing, or green slide.
When it comes to wood forts and playset design, the style here doesn’t include a blueprint. Each clubhouse begins with a wish list of features and a conversation with the client family to uncover both the “now” and the “future” of how the space will be used. With a willing client and an open mind, the process becomes a collaboration—their dreams fuel the imagination. From there, a crude drawing takes shape, and just a few months later, the result is a custom playset built with craftsmanship and quality rarely seen in typical backyard forts or swing sets. |
These one-of-a-kind playscape projects aren’t for everyone. They require a generous budget, but in return, families receive something truly unique: a safe, durable, and creative structure that can’t be found in any kit or catalog--a playset designed and built specifically for Texas backyards.
Building Custom Swing Sets Brings Me Peace.
|
There are few things in the world as rewarding as building a custom backyard playset. Over the years, many forts and swing sets have been created for families, and it’s an honor to share that same joy with parents through DIY swing set plans. The pride that comes from these projects carries through daily life. While kids may never remember the builder, they will always hold on to the memories made at their backyard playscape—memories shaped by quality craftsmanship.

The challenge of a custom build is the root of this passion. Half the fun comes from starting with a blank slate and a wish list. Some playsets are simple, while others—like the dual-tower playset with slides and bridge pictured here—go far beyond simple. The philosophy at Jack’s Backyard is this: “It’s mine until I give it to you.”
Build It Well and Build With Purpose
|
Building wooden playsets for free isn’t an option. The best option is simple—build for your kids, and make sure the project is worth the investment. These types of custom playscape projects are not for everyone, and a generous budget helps.
Each custom fort or wooden playhouse is built one at a time, in the order deposits are made. Most projects carry a 3–6 month waiting list. Paying more won’t move a project ahead. Offering to “help” only slows things down (and costs more). Offering to pay less guarantees a dial tone. And offering to pay more than expected? That just comes off as weird. At the end of the day, these playsets are about creating something lasting for your family—safe, durable, one-of-a-kind backyard adventures. Cool space-themed names for forts and playhouses are always optional, but fun to add. |
Natural Wood Playsets – A Safer, Stronger Choice
Natural woods are a natural choice for backyard playsets. Most custom clubhouses and forts at Jack’s Backyard are built with premium Heart Redwood or locally grown Eastern Red Cedar (sometimes called aromatic cedar).
While pressure-treated lumber can be a more economical option, the preference here is always natural wood playsets. They’re safer for kids, safer for the environment, and safer for the builders who craft them. A well-built natural wood fort or swing set will typically last 7–10 years, sometimes longer, and with proper maintenance, resale value can reach 50%–75%.

Northern White Cedar is not a Good Match for Texas
There’s a company up in the northeast that builds custom swingsets from northern white cedar. They look impressive, but the truth is—cedar like that simply doesn’t hold up under Texas heat, humidity, and soil conditions. On top of that, families often pay thousands more in freight just to get them delivered.
Built for Texas, Not Shipped from Maine
With Jack’s Backyard, you get something better: durable redwood playsets built locally, without the freight costs, and with craftsmanship tailored for Texas families. It’s a stronger material, perfectly suited to our weather, and it supports a local small business instead of a faraway manufacturer.
At Jack’s Backyard, families get a smarter solution: locally built redwood playsets. Redwood is naturally durable, weather-resistant, and holds up beautifully in Texas backyards. Choosing local means saving on freight, supporting a family-owned business, and receiving craftsmanship tailored to each yard and each family—not a one-size-fits-all kit shipped across the country.
